Myqerem Tafaj

Myqerem Tafaj (born November 14, 1957 in Dibra ) is an Albanian politician ( PD ). Between 2009 and 2013 he was Minister of Education in Sali Berisha's government . On April 4, 2013, he also took over the post of Deputy Prime Minister, which he held until September 15, 2013.

life and career

In the late 1970s he moved to Tirana , where he began studying zoology at the Agricultural University of Tirana , where he received his PhD in 1988. In 1990 he received a one-year grant from the German Foundation for International Development (DSE), which gave him the opportunity to deepen his research in Germany. Between 1992 and 1995, Myqerem Tafaj completed his second doctorate at the University of Hohenheim . In 1996 he returned to Albania and became director in the Ministry of Education. From March 1997 to July 1997 he was Minister for Education and Science in the Albanian interim government. In 1999 Tafaj received a research grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and worked as a visiting professor at the University of Hohenheim.

In 2005 he returned to Albania and worked as a professor at the Agricultural University of Tirana and advisor for education to Prime Minister Sali Berisha. In 2009, Tafaj was reappointed Minister of Education. In 2013, the Berisha government had to resign after the election failure on June 23, and the Socialist Party of Albania took over government with Edi Rama as prime minister.

In late March 2015, the Ministry of Education brought charges against him. Among other things, Tafaj is said to have licensed programs and events to the University of Vitrina , although the Ministry's Accreditation Council spoke out against such a step. All charges were dropped by the highest court in Albania in May 2016.
