Myxoviruses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term myxoviruses (from Greek myxa = mucus) is a historically outdated and non-taxonomic name for a group of viruses that have been assigned a special affinity for infections of the respiratory tract (with "mucus formation"). In today's virus taxonomy , the term myxovirus is not used. Most of the members of the former group are now assigned to the two virus families, the Orthomyxoviridae ("true myxoviruses") and the Paramyxoviridae .
