A presser foot is a device used on sewing machines to hold fabric flat while it is being sewn.

Types of presser feet

Presser feet

The most commonly used presser feet are the all-purpose foot and the zipper foot, which are included in most household sewing machines. However, there are also a number of special feet that are designed for different uses, such as the following:

  • Blindstitch foot
  • Button sewing foot
  • Buttonhole foot
  • Darning foot
  • Fringed foot
  • Gathering foot
  • Seam-covered zipper foot
  • Narrow hem / rolled hem foot
  • open presser foot
  • Overlock foot
  • Pintuck foot
  • 1/4 inch quilting foot
  • Roller presser
  • Satin stitch foot
  • Straight stitch foot

Most presser feet are made of steel or clear plastic. However, there are also presser feet made of Teflon or other non-stick materials, which are used when sewing with leather, plastic, vinyl or oilcloths.
