In printing technology , cells denote small, surface and depth-variable depressions in a printing form with which the information to be printed (the printing elements) is represented.

In the gravure printing process, the cells are filled with color. The color is then released back onto the substrate. Wells can be created by etching , mechanical engraving (e.g. with a stylus ) or laser engraving.
