The Nuremberg Accordion Orchestra ( NAO ) was founded in 1946 by Willi Münch together with his wife Paula as an accordion quintet and today consists of around 27 musicians. In addition to classical music, the NAO also plays contemporary works and won 1st prize at the " German Orchestra Competition " in 2008 in Wuppertal and twice 1st prize at the " World Music Festival " in Innsbruck in 2004 and 2010. In 1993, it was awarded the City of Nuremberg's Culture Prize excellent; In 2004 it received the von Tucher family's culture fund award and, in 2007, the Middle Franconian district's sponsorship award.

Willi Münch advocated contemporary compositions as diverse as Constantin Brunck , Fritz Dobler , Waldram Hollfelder , Hans Ludwig Schilling and Werner Heider , making commitment to modern music one of the orchestra's long-term goals. Since 1998, through the initiative of Stefan Hippe, numerous commissioned compositions have been made, which are premiered by the NAO in its own concert series ACCORDEONOVA , of which 3 CDs have so far been released.

In addition to the orchestra, there is the Nuremberg Accordion Ensemble (NAE), which consists of members of the orchestra. The ensemble (NAE) was founded in 1997 by Marco Röttig and plays as a sextet with five traditional accordions and one bass accordion. Works by Werner Heider , Stefan Hippe and Bronislaw Przybylski , among others , were composed for the ensemble . The sextet has already won many national and international awards. In 2010 they won first prize in the top tier of playgroups at the 10th World Music Festival Innsbruck.
