Nuremberg Egg (Dresden)
The Nuremberg Egg in Dresden's Südvorstadt is the slang term for a square-like expansion of the eponymous Nürnberger Straße . The square also contains a track loop for the terminus "Südvorstadt" of tram line 8 .
The Nürnberger Egg was created during the construction of Nürnberger Strasse between 1900 and 1905 and, after plans that were later discarded, should be built with a church. The Zionskirche was finally built in another place on Nürnberger Strasse from 1901, the Nuremberg Egg remained undeveloped. The oval square, which was partially destroyed in the Second World War , is now a park-like facility that is crossed at right angles at the widest point by Liebigstrasse. The surrounding houses on the eastern part of the square are mainly representative Art Nouveau buildings. In addition to residential buildings, the western part includes a shopping area that was created in the 1950s. A residential area restaurant of the same name "Nürnberger Ei", which was also built at the time, was replaced between 1994 and 1996 by a residential and commercial building with an oval floor plan.
Due to the many shops that have settled in the vicinity of the square, the square forms a district center. There are some banks and numerous pharmacies on the square, which have settled there due to the nearby medical centers. At the western end of the Nürnberger Eis is the terminus "Südvorstadt" of the tram line 8. An association of the same name is committed to revitalizing the square.
