NAJAD is a Swedish manufacturer of sailing yachts .

General

The Swedish shipyard Najadvarvet AB in Henån on the boat building island Orust in the Western Archipelago north of Gothenburg has been building sailing yachts under the NAJAD brand since 1971 . So far over 2000 boats have been delivered.

history

Originally founded in 1971 as a small craft business by boat builder Bernd Arvidsson in Kungsviken (also on the island of Orust), the shipyard first relocated to the Henån marina in the late 1970s, and then moved to its current location in Varvsvägen in Henån in the early 1990s. The first model was the NAJAD 34. During these years the shipyard made a name for itself for stable, seaworthy blue water cruising yachts, mostly with a center cockpit between 32 and 51 feet. Well-known models from this era are the NAJAD 320, NAJAD 391 and NAJAD 460. The trademark of NAJAD sailing yachts is the Bordeaux-red water pass.

In 2003 the Dutch businessman Alfred van Wincoop took over the shipyard from Bernd Arvidsson. Originally from the financial sector, van Wincoop (himself owner of several NAJAD yachts) had worked as a marketing manager in the shipyard for a year before the takeover. He subjected the NAJAD model range to a dramatic change. The German design office judel / vrolijk & co. ( Friedrich Judel and Rolf Vrolijk ) gave the new models modern, sporty lines and the new interior designer Rhoades / Young Interiors (originally Dick Young Interiors) from London created an elegant, bright interior. Representatives of this new series are in particular the NAJAD 505 models and the flagship, the NAJAD 570 .

Financial bottlenecks in the course of the global financial and economic crisis in 2008/2009 forced Alfred van Wincoop to give up the shipyard in 2009. The English company Animatrix Capital Ltd. became the new owner. The Swedish brand Maxi-Yachts also belonged to NAJAD. The management team in January 2011 were the shipyard boss (CEO) Mikael Gustavsson, the chairman of the supervisory board (Chairman) Hans Johansson and sales and marketing manager Magnus Ridderstad.

In August 2011 the shipyard had to file for bankruptcy and in October of the same year it was taken over by the motor yacht manufacturer "Nord-West", which is also based on the island of Orust. The ships are now being manufactured at "Nord-West" in Vindön. In the NAJAD shipyard on Varvsvägen in Henån, a service company for winter storage, repair and conversion of yachts was established under the name OYS Orust Yacht Service.

Nord West & NAJAD AB (Managing Director: Benny Martinsson) then went bankrupt in February 2013. Her fortune was taken over by the Swedish businessman Runo Gillholm, who sold the NAJAD brand and the shapes of the current models NAJAD 355, NAJAD 410, NAJAD 440cc, NAJAD 440ac, NAJAD 505 and NAJAD 570 to the Swedish shipyard Lidköpings Båtsnickeri (manufacturer of the SwedeStar sailing yachts). Under the direction of Managing Director Håkan Bengtsson and Sales Manager Olof Seiving, NAJAD then returned to its original location in Henån, where NAJAD sailing yachts are built at Orust Yacht Service with old NAJAD staff.

Locations

All GRP parts (hulls, decks, structure and other molded parts) were produced in our own production facility in Åmål , approx. 150 km northeast of Orust. These components were built as a foam sandwich by vacuum infusion using vinyl ester resins and Divynicell foam. The hull, deck, load-bearing bulkheads and keel were then connected and later expanded to be closed.

The final assembly and expansion then took place in the main factory in Henån. In addition to the assembly halls, the joinery, warehouse and administration were also located here. At this location, which went to two private investors (including a former Najad employee) after the bankruptcy, a service center and winter storage were to be built.
