NAOTS ( N aval A viation O rdnance T est S tation or N aval A ir O rdnance T est S tation ) was a base of the US Navy near the city of Chincoteague in the US state of Virginia . The station was a secret part of the Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) Chincoteague, which was isolated from the rest of the station and separated by a fence.

Projects

Among other things, the NAOTS launched Rockair research rockets from McDonnell F2H aircraft in 1955 . The pilot rocket , which was launched by a Douglas F4D aircraft, was also developed here under the strictest of secrecy in the late 1950s.

history

In 1959, NASA took over the Naval Aviation Ordnance Test Station and parts of the station were merged with the Wallops Island Facility , later renamed the Wallops Flight Facility .
