NEMO is a science center in Amsterdam near the Central Station . The building, built in 1997 and designed by Renzo Piano , stands on the foundations of the IJ tunnel . It forms the entrance to the tunnel and is - probably intentionally - often compared to a ship. The roof is a popular meeting and viewing point. Picnics are expressly allowed. If there are only a few visitors in the museum, the roof is also open to non-visitors.

The Science Center opened at this location in 1997 under the name "New Metropolis" and was renamed in 2000 after financial problems. 300,000 visitors are expected to visit the NEMO every year.

The exhibition contains exhibits from all areas of science on four levels. The focus is on hands-on experiments as well as technical and biological education for children.
