The Émeraude class was not built to end submarine - class of the French Navy . In the French type classification of the time, it would have been class 3 boats. The construction was an enlarged further development of the submarine minelayer of the Saphir class . In May 1938, the Émeraude was laid down in Toulon as the first and only boat of the class. The unfinished boat was destroyed by the French on June 18, 1940, a few days before the Franco-German armistice , to prevent further use by the war opponents. The orders for six other planned submarines were canceled.

The project was not continued after the end of the war.

Explanations

  1. The French metric 550 mm standard can be converted to the internationally widespread 533 mm standard (21 inches ) with plug-in adapters.
  2. The French Navy distinguished 3 classes of submarines: 1st class boats were ocean-going boats. 2nd class boats were smaller coastal boats. 3rd class boats were mine layers .
