The 4-6-2T locomotives (wheel arrangement 2'C1 ') built by Hawthorn Leslie for Natal Government Railways (NGR ) were 610 mm narrow gauge tank locomotives .
The machines were built for the 158 km stretch between Esperanza and Donnybrook on the south coast of Natal , which was completed in 1908 . Six locomotives were delivered in 1907; they were based on a similar series that was already successfully in use on the route between Estcourt and Weenen . The locomotives had an external plate frame and Walschaerts controls . They could pull 90 t on an incline of 30 ‰.
After the Natal Government Railway was absorbed into the newly founded South African Railways (SAR), the locomotives were classified as class NG 3 with the train numbers NG 4 to NG 9.
In 1915, locomotives 4, 5 and 9 were temporarily relocated to South West Africa because there was a lack of locomotives there during the First World War. After their return they were used again on routes in Natal.
In 1934 locomotive No. 4 was bought by the South Western Railway , where it was in service until it ceased operations in 1949. In 1939, locomotive No. 5 was relocated to the Avontuur Railway , where it was mainly used for shunting in Port Elizabeth . It was the last SAR locomotive of this class in 1946 and was then sold as an industrial locomotive.
