NITF (XML)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The News Industry Text Format ( NITF ) is an XML -based document format for exchanging news reports.

The format was developed by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), founded in 1965 , which, among other things, also defined the formats for agency reports. NITF was initially defined as an SGML standard and standardized the approximately 150 different formats for press releases that had previously existed. After switching to XML in 1999, Version 3.0 (currently 3.6) was adopted in 2001. In 2000, pte (pressetext news agency) was the first news agency in German-speaking countries to introduce the NITF standard. In the meantime, NITF is used by most of the major news agencies , such as the dpa , to distribute reports and articles.

While NITF is tailored for individual messages, the NewsML standard introduced on October 11, 2000 also allows multiple message texts and the relationships between them to be specified.
