The AM 86-89 series (also 09 series ) of the Belgian State Railways (NMBS / SNCB) is a series of 120 km / h two-part electric traction vehicle units for operation with 3 kV direct current.
The first series of 35 units consisting of railcars and control cars began in 1986. In the second batch of almost identical vehicles, of the 35 units ordered until 1991, only 17 were ultimately delivered. The vehicles are particularly characterized by high acceleration values, but due to the low friction , the traction and braking behavior of the relatively light railcars are considered problematic. The series is mainly used in the local transport of the NMBS / SNCB (especially on the Ligne 26) around Brussels.
The vehicles are equipped with automatic central buffer couplings from the Georg Fischer system. They have 158 seats in the second and 40 seats in the first carriage class . As a novelty in passenger comfort, the seat arrangement 2 + 2 was used for the first time in this series ; until then, trains in Belgian local transport mostly had the seat arrangement 2 + 3 . Because of the characteristic polyester forehead , the vehicles have been nicknamed Duikbril (= diving goggles ).
At the beginning of 2012, railcar 916 was the first to be modernized based on the model of the AM 80 series .
