The first issue of NZZ Geschichte was published in April 2015. The editorial director was Peer Teuwsen , he produced the magazine together with Martin Beglinger. In April 2018 Martin Beglinger moved to NZZ and Lea Haller joined the editorial team. In August 2019, Peer Teuwsen moved to NZZ am Sonntag , where he took over the management of the cultural section; Lea Haller took over the editorial management of NZZ Geschichte . The new editor was Daniel Di Falco (previously editor at the federal government ). In the first two years, NZZ Geschichte was published in four issues per year, at the beginning of 2017 the number was increased to six issues. They appear in early February, late March, mid-May, mid-July, early October and early December.
Concept and design
NZZ Geschichte is published in the format 175 × 240 mm and comprises 116 pages. The Winkreative agency was responsible for the layout of the magazine. The magazine is not a mono-thematic one, each issue has different topics and sections. In addition to the main topic, consisting of the cover story and any other contributions, there is an interview with a historian, thematic series, portraits, essays and an encore section that includes recommendations for books and exhibitions. Internal and external authors write for the magazine. The articles are based on the current state of research and are largely written by experts, but are journalistic and convey historical knowledge to a broad audience in a stimulating way. A great deal of weight is placed on the pictures: historical photographs and pictures are on an equal footing with the text. If there is no first-class picture material on a topic, the contributions will be illustrated.
Thematic orientation
The range of topics at NZZ Geschichte is broad, with a focus on Swiss history and modernity (19th and 20th centuries). In addition to political history and economic history, cultural history is strongly represented, plus the history of events and portraits. The aim is to shed light on the present by looking into the past, to explain historical changes and to show what is supposedly self-evident in a new light.
