Night (novel)

Nacht (in the American original: Night; a Novel ) is the first work of 1950 by the German-Jewish writer Edgar Hilsenrath, who became famous through Der Nazi & der Friseur . The novel was published in the USA in 1954, but was not published in Germany until 1964 in a very small edition by Kindler Verlag .

The book describes the life and the struggle for the survival of the Eastern European Jew Ranek in the fictional Prokow ghetto in the Ukrainian ruined city ​​of Prokow on the Dniester. The hopeless situation of people suffering from hunger, illness, powerlessness and fear is depicted, which leads to an increasing brutalization of the victims.

Reviews

After the first edition was largely ignored due to internal quarrels within the publisher, Fritz J. Raddatz slammed the second, while Niels Höpfner praised it as an unsentimental "heavy piece of grief work". Also in January Süselbeck appeared impressed given the new edition 2006 of the novel.
