Night giger

The night giger is the name of a monster-like child frightening figure in Franconia , comparable to the Butzemann (Boogeyman in American). In some areas Franconian dialect depends also Nachtgeger , Nachdgiecher or Noochdgieger called. He is supposed to go around at night and fetch children who are cheeky or who are still traveling alone.

The night giger seems unable or unwilling to penetrate houses; he is content with what he can find on the street after 10 p.m. He shares this behavior and the nocturnal appearance with the vampires . Allegedly the night giger eats the children.

The figure of the night giger is used to scare children and to make sure that they don't wander around alone at night or that they go to bed "good". He is a "universal horror" who appears in many ways.

Furthermore, adults who “turn night into day”, that is, who are extensively out and about until the early hours of the morning, are referred to as night giger . A pub in Nuremberg is called Nachtgiger .

Appearance

Usually the night giger is described as a large black figure. Obviously no one knows exactly what to say, but the uncertainty about his appearance is an added fear factor. According to some variants, the night giger is armed with wings and can stalk its victims like a vampire. The word Giger means rooster in Franconian . That is why aspects of the rooster are also associated with the night giger.

"Look that ham kummsd, sunsd hould di fei der Nachdgicher" - something like "Make sure you come home, otherwise the night giger will pick you up"

"You bisd mer aa rechder Nachdgicher" - something like "You are also quite a night drift to me"

Arts and Culture

Günter Stössel used the night giger for the title of one of his albums. ( Nachtgiger strolling along ) The HG Nürnberg annually organizes a Nachtgiger - hockey tournament for senior citizens, which is nationally popular.
