Nacional is a Croatian magazine from Zagreb . The newspaper is a member of the journalistic research network European Investigative Collaboration (EIC).

history

Nacional was founded in 1995 by Croatian journalists Denis Kuljiš and Ivo Pukanić , among others . During the reign of Franjo Tuđman's HDZ , it was one of the few independent media outlets critical of the government in young Croatia, along with the Feral Tribune . Nacional attacked the government with sometimes questionable reports, which made the magazine better known, but which were mostly based on alleged testimony of anonymous people or even fictitious witnesses. Pukanić is said to have had informants with important functions in Tuđman's government. In the final phase of the government election on January 3, 2000, there were more intense attacks on the HDZ, which ultimately lost the election against the SDP .

Scandals

According to a report in which the then government under Tuđman and the Croatian secret police SZUP were accused of having won the championship for the football club Croatia (since 2000 again Dinamo Zagreb ) in 1999, the editor-in-chief Ivo Pukanić and the reporter Robert Bajrusi were announced on June 7th Arrested by police in 1999 and asked about their sources for this report. The offices of the Nacional and the living quarters of the editors and the then Justice Minister Miroslav Šeparović were then searched.

attack

The editor-in-chief Ivo Pukanić and the marketing director of the Nacional , Niko Franjić , were killed by a car bomb in a bomb attack in Zagreb on October 23, 2008.

According to Pukanić, he was already the target of an assassination attempt in front of his house in Zagreb in April 2008, in which an unknown perpetrator shot him, but missed him with the first shot and the second shot jammed the gun. He then received police protection, which was discontinued at his own request in August, said Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko .

On the one hand, Pukanić was praised for his work. Critics also accused him of being too close to some politicians and an alleged mafia boss. In the summer of 2008 he was expelled from the professional association of journalists after he had his wife forcibly sent to a psychiatric hospital with the active help of his contacts with the police.
