The naked- eyed pigeon ( Patagioenas corensis , syn .: Columba corensis ), also called Ala Blanca pigeon , is a species of pigeon birds. The bare-eyed pigeon is only found in South America. The bare-eyed pigeon is heavily hunted in its range, but its population is not endangered.

Your commonly used German name is not clear. In addition to her, the Alberta dove and the naked-eye earth dove are also called.

Appearance

The naked-eyed pigeon reaches a size of 33 centimeters. The size corresponds to that of a strong city pigeon. There is no gender dimorphism.

The head, neck and chest are gray-pink. The throat, chest, abdomen and under tail-coverts are clearly cream-colored. The mantle, the inner arm wings and the wing covers are gray. The feathers have wide white ends so that when the wings are closed a wide white stripe forms. The beak is horn-colored. The iris yellow-brown, the feet red. The most characteristic feature is the plumage around the eyes. A dark spring ring surrounds an inner light ring under the eyes. The dark eye ring does not get its dark color until the pigeon is 2 years old and is more intense depending on the courtship and breeding mood.

Distribution and way of life

The naked-eyed pigeon occurs in the coastal areas of Venezuela and northern Colombia. It also colonizes the islands of Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and Margarita. Their habitat are open coastal areas and desert areas with thorns and cacti. It also colonizes mangroves and prefers to breed here. After the breeding season it gathers in large swarms and then occurs on cultivated land.

The breeding period is very long, the breeding mood seems to depend on the availability of food. The nest is built in trees or bushes and is a loose platform made of twigs, often laid out with smaller twigs and dried blades of grass. The clutch consists of only one egg. The young birds reach sexual maturity very early and are able to reproduce at five months.
