The Nagios Business Process AddOns are installed in addition to the Nagios or Icinga network monitoring software and expand their range of functions. While the monitoring software itself focuses on the monitoring of individual hosts or services , the Nagios Business Process AddOns enable a view of a complete application (a "business process"), which consists of several hosts or services.

operation area

In addition to a quick overview of all applications, these add-ons can also be used to expand the availability statistics used by Nagios or Icinga to include complete business processes. These statistics can then be used to monitor compliance with service level agreements (SLAs).

The alerting of the contact persons in the event of failures can also take place at the level of complete applications if the alerting is carried out on the individual component level, e.g. B. would trigger too many alarms or is not desired.

Business processes that have been defined once can be built into other business processes as components. This on the one hand enables reusability and on the other hand also creates the possibility of building a hierarchy. Business processes can also be mapped onto a tree-like structure.

Business Impact Analysis

This part of the software shows the same business processes, but does not use the status of the individual components currently determined by the monitoring software. Instead, statuses that the user has set are shown. This enables the effects of failures to be simulated quickly. The applications concerned are visualized (what-if analysis).

history

The Nagios Business Process AddOns were developed in 2003 as part of a project at Sparda -Datenverarbeitung eG in Nuremberg , because at that time no comparable solution was available on the market. In 2007 the Nagios Business Process AddOns were released under GPL . Since then, the software has been continued as an open source project.
