Najmiddin Karim (* 1949 in Kirkuk , Iraq ) is a Kurdish , Iraqi politicians and was on April 3, 2011 to September 14, 2017 Governor of the province of Kirkuk . He is a member of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union (PUK).

Life

Karim was born in Kirkuk and went to school there. He later studied medicine at the University of Mosul . Here he came into contact with Kurdish political groups. From 1972 to 1975 he took part in the fighting of the Peshmerga . He moved to the United States in 1975 , where he initially lived in Washington, DC . After he took on American citizenship in addition to Iraqi citizenship, he moved to Silver Spring , where he established himself as a neurosurgeon . He returned to Iraq in 2009 and was subsequently elected to the Kirkuk Parliament and on March 29, 2011 as governor of Kirkuk.

In an interview on June 21, 2014 Karim spoke out in favor of an independent Kurdish state.

Trivia

When the President of the United States Ronald Reagan was admitted to the emergency room after the attack in 1981 , Karim was on duty.

Karim headed the medical team that cared for the former Iraqi President and his party friend Jalal Talabani after his stroke from 2012–2014 .
