Nakagawa Nobuo ( Japanese 中 川 信 夫 ) (born April 18, 1905 in Kyoto , † June 17, 1984 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese director who was best known for his horror films in the 50s and 60s.

life and career

Nakagawa Nobuo was born in Kyoto on April 18, 1905. Prior to his career in film, he wrote reviews for the Japanese film magazine Kinema Junpō . From 1929 he worked as an assistant director for Makino Film Productions under Masahiro Makino . After the bankruptcy of Makino Film Productions in 1932, he moved to Utaemon Ichikawa's Production Company where he made his directorial debut in 1934 with the film Yumiya Hachiman Ken . He later moved to the Japanese film and theater production company Tōhō , where he turned some comedies with Enomoto Ken'ichi . During wartime he made some war documentaries. After the war he moved to the Shintoho film studio where he became known in Europe in 1959 with the horror film Tōkaidō Yotsuya kaidan (The Ghost of Yotsuya). Jigoku followed in 1960 and was released on DVD in 2006 by the American company The Criterion Collection . Nakagawa Nobuo died in Tokyo on June 17, 1984.
