Nakamura Kichiemon ( Japanese 中 村 吉 右衛門 ; born March 24, 1886 in Kisakata-chō (象 潟 町) Asakusa ( Tōkyō ); died September 5, 1954 ) was a Japanese kabuki actor.

life and work

Nakamura Kichiemon appeared under this name for the first time in 1897 as a youth. In 1902 he got a permanent job and trained under Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​IX (9 代 目 市 川 団 十郎), who worked at the same theater, on. He later performed together with Onoe Kikugorō VI. (尾 上 菊 五郎 六 代; 1885–1949) in Ichimuraza (市 村 座) on what is known as the "Kiku-Kichi Era", the Golden Age of Kabuki. In 1923 he left Ichimuraza and worked for the Shochiku film company . With the trilogy "Kiyomasa and Nijō Castle " (二条 城 の 清正), "Kiyomasa and Ulsan Castle " (蔚 山城 の 清正) and "Kiyomasa and Kumamoto Castle " (熊 本 城 の 清正) he became known as "The Kiyomasa Actor".

Nakamura was one of the leading kabuki actors of the Shōwa period , especially in the historical plays (時代 物, Jidaimono), but also a well-known film actor.

In 1951 Nakamura was the first kabuki player to receive the cultural medal . His grandson Kichiemon II (* 1944) continues the Kabuki line as a kabuki actor.
