Nakamura Teijo ( Japanese 中 村 汀 女 ; born April 11, 1900 in Ezu, Hōtaku County (today: Kumamoto ); † September 20, 1988 ), actually Nakamura Hamako ( 中 村 破 魔 子 ,) was a Japanese haiku poet of the Shōwa period . She was an honorary citizen of Kumamoto City.

Life

Nakamura Teijo was born on April 11, 1900 as the only daughter of Saitō Heishirō ( 斉 藤 平 四郎 ) and his wife Tei ( テ イ ) in the village of Ezu , former district of Hōtaku (now part of the city of Kumamoto), Kumamoto Prefecture.

In 1912 she attended the girls' high school (now the first high school) in Kumamoto Prefecture and in 1918 finished the additional course at the same school. In 1920 she married the tax officer Nakamura Shigeki ( 中 村 重 喜 ) from Kumamoto and traveled with him from place to place in the country in the course of professional transfers.

In 1934 she became a member of the Haiku magazine Hototogisu and published her first haiku collection Shunsetsu ( 春雪 , English "spring snow ").

In 1947, after the Second World War, she founded the haiku magazine Kazabana ( 風 花 , German for "windflowers" or, figuratively, "snowflakes").

Nakamura Teijo admired Sugita Hisajo and is said to have even sent him letters ("fan mail") to show his admiration. In 1980 she was named Bunka Kōrōsha, a person with special cultural merits .
