Nakazawa Hiromitsu

Nakazawa Hiromitsu ( Japanese 中 澤 弘光 ; born August 4, 1874 in Tokyo ; died September 8, 1964 ) was a Japanese painter and graphic artist of the Yōga direction during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Hiromitsu Nakazawa was the son of a Samurai of Sadowara- han ( 佐 土 原 藩 ) in Miyazaki Prefecture . From 1887 he studied painting in the western style under Soyama Sachihiko ( 曽 山 幸 彦 ; 1860-1892). After his death he trained under Horie Masaaki ( 堀 江 正 章 ; 1852-1932). From 1896 he attended the Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō ( 東京 美術 学校 ), the forerunner of today's Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku , studied under Kuroda Seiki and completed his training in 1900. At the 1st art exhibition of the Ministry of Culture ( 文部省 美術展 覧 会 Mombusho Bijutsu Tenrankai ), abbreviated “Bunten”, in 1907 he received a prize for his painting “Summer”. In 1922 he stayed in Europe for a year.

Nakazawa continued to exhibit at the Bunter and the successor institutions. He created paintings, watercolors and color woodcuts, illustrated books and also created book covers. Together with Ishikawa Toraji , Nakagawa Hachirō (1877-1922) and Yasuda Minoru, he published a portfolio with woodcuts in 1917 under the title "New Territory Souvenirs".

The artist was a member of the Japanese Academy of Arts . He was honored in 1957 as a person with special cultural merits .
