Nana (mythology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nana ( Greek  Νάνα ) is in Greek mythology the daughter of the river god Sangarios and the mother of Attis , the son of Agdistis .

Nana became pregnant when she ate from an almond tree , which had grown up quickly from the blood of the bisexual being Agdistis after his emasculation . Whether this "shameful" event was imprisoned by her father so that she would starve, Nana was kept alive with fruits and jelly from the Great Mother , another name for Cybele - and this sometimes also the name of Agdistis after his / her emasculation held so that she could give birth to Attis, who was abandoned after birth and raised by a billy goat.

According to Karl Kerényi , Nana is also another name for the Great Mother Cybele, with which she fertilizes herself, life ultimately arises from herself.

The story of Nana thus also has certain similarities with that of Danae with her captivity and fertilization by Zeus .
