The Sakarya ( Turkish Sakarya Nehri ; Greek Σαγγάριος , Latin Sangarius ) is a river in Turkey . It is the third longest river in the country after the Euphrates and Kızılırmak .

The length of the Sakarya is 790 km. Its catchment area is 53,800 km². It rises in the province of Afyon and first flows towards Inner Anatolia. Then it turns again to the north and takes up the tributaries Porsuk Çayı and Ankara Çayı at the level of Polatlı . In late antiquity , the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian (527-565) had the stone Sangarius Bridge built at the strategically important river crossing at today's Adapazarı after the strong current repeatedly tore the pontoon bridge away.

The Sakarya is dammed 43 km south of Alpu to the Gökçekaya dam .

The Turkish province of Sakarya is named after the river .
