Nanhai No. 1
Nanhai No. 1 or Nanhai 1 ( Chinese 南海 一號 / 南海 一号 , Pinyin Náihǎi yīhào , English Nanhai No. 1 / South China Sea No. 1 ) is a Chinese merchant ship that was sold during the Southern Song Dynasty in South China Sea (Chinese: Nan Hai ) sank. The ship is named after the place where it was found.
The shipwreck was discovered in 1987 off Yangjiang on the south coast of China in Guangdong Province . Archaeologists have estimated the total inventory of the ship to be between 50,000 and 70,000 art treasures. In 2007, the recovery of the ship and its cargo began. An underwater museum , the Nanhai No. 1 Museum (广东 海上 丝绸之路 博物馆, Guangdong Maritime silkroad Museum / Chinese Museum of the Maritime Silk Road) was specially built for the ship on the island of Hailing in Yangjiang .
