Gole

"Boppele"

The Gole are the main characters of the Riedlinger Fasnet. The Gole family consists of three adult and two children's masks. The adult masks are characterized by their enormous size: They are over 70 cm high. The wearers look out of the mouth of the masks.

All figures wear tunics with the Riedlinger coat of arms on their chests, spears and shields. The masks were originally made of paper mache, but those used today are made of plastic. The originals are in the Narrenmuseum in Bad Dürrheim .

Allegedly, the word Gole can be traced back to the biblical giant Goliath . One of Riedling's fool's songs, the Golelied, also tells the story that Goliath, who was born in Riedlingen, swam across the Danube into the Black Sea to offer his services to the Philistines. It is more likely, however, that the word can be derived from "howling".

Jaundice

The first giant that was seen for the first time at the Riedlinger Fasnet in 1818 is today's jaundice . His larger-than-life papier mâché head is shaped by an Asian expression with yellow skin, strong cheekbones, a low forehead and a black beard. A helmet with yellow-green ornaments is located on the head, which is around 70 cm tall. Jaundice is dressed in a yellow-brown tunic with a belt, including trousers of the same color and black boots.

Old Gole

The old Gole first appeared in 1870. He has a noticeably dark face and wears a gold helmet.

New gole

The new Gole came to the Riedlinger Fasnet in 1890. He has a black mustache and a silver helmet.

Little Gole

The two little Gole are children's masks. They came to the group in the 20th century.

Golia

In 1954 a Golia appeared as the wife of the new Gole. However, the mask could not establish itself and soon afterwards disappeared again from the image of the Riedlinger Fasnet.

Golf companion

The golf companions do not belong to the actual golf family. They have been the Gole's bodyguard since 1954, are armed with spears and have grim facial expressions.

Traditional masks

Kupfernäs
Running black and washerwoman

As the largest mask group in Riedling, the Boppele in their dark brown plush suits accompany the Gole happily hopping and ensure a foolish hustle and bustle with their "stretching scissors" and "Saublotern". The figure was created in 1936 based on a design by Adolf Gröber. They carry a leather goller over their shoulder, equipped with smaller and larger metal bells and provided with felt strips in the fool's colors green, yellow, white and red on the edge. In contrast to the golf companion, the wooden mask of the Boppele has a cheerful, laughing appearance. Each Boppele carries either a "Saubloder" with which to hand out gentle blows, or a pair of wooden scissors, which is used mainly to grab the hats of spectators.

Among the traditional masks addition to those Boppele nor the Kupfernäs , the groups Mohr and lions , storks and frogs and running Mohr and washerwomen , the two faces and the Besenweib .

Course of the Riedlinger Fasnet

The Riedlinger Fasnet traditionally opens on the Wednesday before Rose Monday with the "Raus mit em Gole". Fools and other bystanders gather in front of the Gole home and shout loudly “Get out with em Gole !!!”. The different mask groups then appear one after the other. The climax is the appearance of the Gole family, who emerge from under an arch of fire.

The school exemption takes place at the "Fasnetsdoschtig", where the Gole passes through the schools in Riedlingen and all the schoolchildren gather at the Narrenbaumstellen on the market square. The traditional parade takes place in Riedlingen on Tuesday. There, among other things, all fools guilds of the sub-communities jump with them. Afterwards everyone meets in the city hall and auction hall for a happy party. On the evening before Ash Wednesday, the evil spirit of Fasnet is burned in the market square. Then the Gole and his entourage move back to Goleheim with large handkerchiefs.

Fool call

The fool's call of the Riedlinger fools guild is a long drawn-out “gooole”.
