history

The company was founded on July 5, 1867 to provide a direct link between New York City and Portland . The section from Nashua to Rochester was still missing . The connection to New York was made by the Worcester and Nashua Railroad , the connection to Portland by the Portland and Rochester Railroad . The approximately 78 kilometers long, standard gauge line Nashua - Rochester went into operation on November 24, 1874. The two companies merged on December 1, 1883 to form the Worcester, Nashua and Rochester Railroad , which later also began joint operations with Portland & Rochester. From 1886 the railroad was under the control of the Boston and Maine Railroad . The line is closed today.
