Nashville West was a California-based country band who are counted among the pioneers of country rock .
history
In 1966, Gib Guilbeau and Gene Parsons , who had previously been members of a band called The Casteways , got together for a recording session with The Gosdin Brothers . They were reinforced by the well-known guitarist Clarence White , who had previously played with the Kentucky Colonels . A little later came the bassist Wayne Moore, who had also played for the Casteways. The quartet was formed under various names such as The Reasons or The Gary Paxton Band house band of the Nashville West Club of El Monte , California.
The group eventually renamed itself Nashville West and initially worked as a studio band for the newly formed Bakersfield International Records label. The four musicians took part in several recordings of the small label run by Gary Paxton . They also played in Nashville West and other Californian clubs. Thanks to White's outstanding guitar playing, a loyal following quickly formed.
Nashville West only produced a single album, which was only released eight years after the group split up (and was released on CD in 2003, expanded by four bonus tracks). It contains live recordings recorded by Gene Parsons on a two-track tape recorder during a performance at the Nashville West Club in 1967. The group broke up in just over a year after White and Parsons were poached by the Byrds . Gilbeau later joined the Flying Burrito Brothers . Moore worked as a session musician.
