Nasolabial fold
The nasolabial fold or nasal lip furrow ( sulcus nasolabialis , from Latin nasus "nose" and labium "lip") is the name given to the soft tissue depression that extends from the upper end of the nostrils to the corners of the mouth and is one of the special features of the face . It used to be known as the "grief fold". The shape, depth and length of the nasolabial fold are determined by the facial muscles , the varying extent of the subcutaneous fatty tissue and age. In the depth of the fold there is a lymph node , the nodus nasolabialis .
A temporarily (6–12 months) reduced expression is achieved in aesthetic medicine with injection of hyaluronic acid .
In alternative medicine , the nasolabial fold is used to identify various diseases. A nasolabial fold emphasized on the right is supposed to indicate painful biliary diseases, a one-sided deepening to heart disease ("heart fold") and pronounced deepening in the lower area to gastric or duodenal disorders. In acupuncture, the nasolabial fold serves as a guiding structure for the colonic duct. In addition, in the middle of the fold is the acupuncture point Di20, which is said to be effective in diseases of the nose, paranasal sinuses, facial paralysis and trigeminal neuralgia .
