The National Archives of Australia are the national archives of Australia . The agency was created by the Australian government under the Archives Act 1983 to preserve and protect state and historically significant documents. The main building is in the capital, Canberra , with branches in the capitals of all states and territories.
Most documents are on paper. There are also extensive collections of photos, posters, maps, architectural drawings, films, plays, sheet music and sound recordings. The main focus of the collection is on the material that has been collected by ministries, commissions, authorities, military units, security services, secret services and law enforcement agencies since the establishment of Australia in 1901, as well as diplomatic communications. This material is supplemented by notes from governors-general, prime ministers and other members of government.
The main building in Canberra has a permanent exhibition called the Charters of Our Nation , which contains two of the most important documents in Australian history:
- the Royal Commission of Assent , the law signed by Queen Victoria that created the State of Australia
- the original of the Australian Constitution, which forms the basis of Australian law
There are also temporary exhibitions in the main building.
