The National Institute of Informatics (NII; Japanese 国立 情報 学 研究所 , Kokuritsu jōhōgaku kenkyūsho ) is an institution of the State Inter-University Research Institutes in Japan.

history

In 1973 the Ministry of Culture decided on an "Improved System for the Circulation of Academic Information". This led in 1976 to the establishment of the "Research Center for Library and Information Science (RCLIS)" at the University of Tokyo . In 1983 the RCLIS was reorganized and was now called the “Center for Bibliographic Information”, but was affiliated with the University of Tokyo as before. In 1986 the Center for Bibliographic Information was reorganized as the "National Center for Science Information Systems (NACSIS)" and separated from the University of Tokyo. In 1987 the “Science Information Network (SINET)” was put into operation, plus the NACSIS-IR catalog service. In 1997, the seminar building in Karuizawa ( Nagano prefecture ) was opened from the legacy of Inose Hiroshi , the first director of NACSIS.

The last reorganization so far took place in 2000: the NACSIS was merged into the "National Institute of Informatics (NII)", which received the top ten floors in the "General Science Center" (学術 総 合 セ ン タ -, Gakujutsu sogō sentā) near the Imperial Palace.
