The Maker Faire is a series of events that Maker Media GmbH conducts under license based on the US model in the DA-CH region or for which it grants the rights of use. For this she has acquired the license rights from the American magazine Make . Maker Media GmbH also publishes the Make: Magazine . The Maker Faire is an important meeting place for the German maker scene.

history

The Maker Faires see themselves as family-friendly festivals at which DIY projects of all kinds are the focus. The program is complemented by workshops and lectures as well as artistic performances. They offer makers an important platform to present their projects to a broader public and to receive direct feedback.

The part of the name "Faire" plays with the historical spelling "fayre" for the English word " Jahrmarkt " instead of "fair" (English: fair). This is done on the one hand to underline the fair-like character of the event and on the other hand to protect the name “Maker Faire” as a word mark . The word mark has been registered with O'Reilly Media, Inc. since January 16, 2007 .

The first German Maker Faire was held in Hanover in 2013 and held there again in 2014. Since 2015 it has also taken place in Berlin . The series of events is enjoying growing popularity, with around 150 exhibitors and over 10,000 visitors coming to Hanover in 2015. Since 2016 there has been a student day in Hanover and Berlin , on which only school classes (free) receive admission. In addition, regional Mini Maker Faires are held, e.g. B. in Dortmund and Chemnitz .

In April 2016, a Maker Faire was held in Vienna ( Austria ) for the first time . The first Maker Faire in Switzerland took place in Zurich in September 2016 .
