Ningen Bunka Kenkyū Kikō

The Ningen Bunka Kenkyū Kikō ( Japanese 人間 文化 研究 機構 , "National Institutes for the Humanities", English National Institutes for the Humanities , short: NIHU ), is a Japanese corporation under public law, which was formed on April 1, 2004 and headquartered in the district Minato in Tokyo has. Six state research institutions belong to the organization. It is part of the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation , an umbrella organization for collaboration and interdisciplinary research between universities and research institutions. The six humanities and government institutions are combined in the NIHU for the purpose of interdisciplinary research.

The current head of the humanities research facility is Narifumi Tachimoto; its first director was the historian Yoneo Ishii (1929-2010). The organization employs 595 people (including all subordinate facilities) and had a 2014 budget of 13.4 million yen . The organization has been awarding the NIHU Research Prize every year since 2011.

The logo of the humanities research institutions shows the calligraphy of the character hito ( , human) by Kūkai in a green circle. The characters stand for humanity and knowledge, the color green refers to nature and peacefulness.
