The National Intelligence Service ( Korean : 대한민국 국가 정보원 , abbreviated: 국정원 , NIS ) is the South Korean intelligence service . The acting director is Park Jie-won .

history

The NIS emerged from the KCIA (Korean Central Intelligence Agency, 중앙 정보부 Jungang Jeonbobu ), which was founded in 1961 by the chairman of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction , Major General Park Chung-hee . In 1979, the head of the KCIA, Kim Jae-gyu , ended the dictatorship of Park Chung-hee by killing him . Shortly thereafter, however, Major General Chun Doo-hwan seized power through a coup and carried out a "purge" within the organization, and in 1981 the KCIA was renamed ANSP (Agency for National Security Planning, 국가 안전 기획부 ). In 1999, the intelligence service was given its current name under President Kim Dae-jung .

In the presidential election in South Korea in 2012 , the head of the intelligence service, Won Sei-hoon, had his agency, like the military and police , intervene in favor of Park Geun-hye and led a campaign against Moon Jae-in , who then won the election just lost. Due to the extent of the security authorities' involvement in the election, then President Lee Myung-bak is seen as the mastermind behind the illegal activities. After Park Geun-hye's impeachment, Won Sei-hoon was sentenced to several years in prison.
