Park Jie-won ( Korean : 박지원 , Hanja : 朴 智 元, born June 5, 1942 in Jindo ) is a South Korean politician. He was Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and is the director of the NIS after-sales service .

life and career

He attended high school in Moontae Mokpo and studied at the University of Dankook economy . In 1969 he graduated with a bachelor's degree , after which he worked at Lucky Goldstar, the forerunner of today's LG . In 1972 he emigrated to the USA and became the regional branch manager in New York for the Dongsuhchem company . He later went into business for himself and became a very successful businessman. During his stay in the United States, he met Kim Dae-jung , who was in exile , and supported him. He was also chairman of the Society of Korean Americans in New York and the Federation of Korean Societies in the United States.

In 1987, after the official end of the military dictatorship , he returned to Korea and from then on accompanied Kim Dae-jung on his political career. In 1992 he entered the National Assembly for the Democratic Party , and four years later he lost to Kim Moon-soo . From 1998 to 1999 he was the presidential secretary for public communications , then he took over the ministry for culture, sport and tourism and in 2002 he became the chief of staff of the Blue House .

In 2000 he arranged the first inter- Korean summit between Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il . In 2003, at the beginning of Roo Moo-hyun's tenure , accusations were raised that he had illegally participated in the transfer of millions of euros to North Korea . In 2006 he was sentenced to several years in prison, the following year he was pardoned by the president so that he could run and be re-elected in the parliamentary elections in South Korea in 2008 in Mokpo. In 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Mokpo University .

In 2010 and 2012 he was parliamentary group leader of the Democratic Party, and in 2012 he was also interim chairman . In 2015 he ran for the party chairmanship, but could not prevail against Moon Jae-in . In the general election in South Korea in 2016 , he ran for the People's Party of Ahn Cheol-soo and won the election. After the People's Party broke up over time, he founded the Minsaeng Party together with other members of the parliament , but he was unable to achieve any further electoral success.

After the parliamentary elections in South Korea in 2020 , he was initially given a chair at Dankook University before he was appointed director of the NIS intelligence service in July 2020.
