The Gungminui Party ( Korean : 국민 의 당 , transliteration : Gungminui-dang , German : Citizens' Party or sometimes called the People's Party ) is a South Korean party that - initiated by the former entrepreneur Ahn Cheol-soo ( 안철수 ) - on March 2 February 2016 in the Metropolitan City of Daejeon ( 대전 광역시 ).

history

Ahn Cheol-soo was a member of the Sae-jeongchi-minju-yeonhap party ( 새 정치 민주 연합 , German: New political alliance for democracy), today Deobureo minju party ( 더불어 민주당 , transliteration: Deobureo-minju-dang, German : Joint Democratic Party), which he co-founded in March 2014 as a co-party leader. After a falling out with the second co-chairman Moon Jae-in ( 문재인 ) about the reorientation of the party and the question of a new party leadership, Ahn left the party on December 13, 2015 with the announcement that he wanted to found a new party. A first event of the party in founding took place on January 9, 2016 with founding members registered in 1978 and seven incumbent MPs in Seoul . The committee subsequently formed on January 10, 2016 to prepare for the founding of a new party tried to persuade MPs from Ahn's old party to switch to the new party. A total of 17 MPs accepted this request, but the party strategists did not reach the required number of 20 MPs to be able to form their own parliamentary group in the Gukhoe ( 국회 ), the Korean National Assembly.

On January 25, Ahn and Cheon Jeong-bae ( 천정배 ), who had also left the party, appeared together with the message that they wanted to counterbalance the growing power of President Park Geun-hye ( 박근혜 ). On February 2, 2016, the party was finally officially founded and ran for the elections to the Korean National Assembly on April 13, 2016, in which it immediately received 14.5% of the votes for direct mandates and 26.7% of the votes for the party list , but only got 38 seats in the National Assembly.
