National Rail Museum of India
The National Rail Museum of India is a railway museum in India .
The museum is located in New Delhi , Chanakyapuri , and mainly shows vehicles from the history of the Indian railway . It opened in 1977 for the 125th anniversary of the railroad in India.
Since a very large number of technically quite different railways were built in India by different sponsors - the gauges alone are between 610 mm and 1676 mm - the exhibits are correspondingly diverse. The oldest exhibit is the “ Fairy Queen ”, a steam locomotive from 1855 that has been preserved in working order. It was the second locomotive to come to India and the first locomotive to be assembled in India. There are also 22 other locomotives on display. There are also 17 saloon cars belonging to the Maharajas , the Government of British India and the British Royal Family. In addition to the vehicle collection - which is mainly presented in the open air - models, plans, railway technology and communication systems are exhibited in a museum building.
