The National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) is a particle accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island , New York . The facility is mainly used as a source for synchrotron radiation (see also synchrotron ). It has two electron storage rings for beam forming: the so-called VUV ring ( " v acuum u ltra- v Iolet"), which for wavelengths in the infrared , visible and UV range is designed, as well as X-Ray ring for the production of X-rays . The two storage rings were put into operation in 1984 and 1986, respectively. In 2014 it was switched off and in 2015 the successor NSLS II was put into operation, which has been under construction since 2009.

The NSLS is operated by the US Department of Energy .
