National Wildlife Health Center

The National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) is a United States Geological Survey (USGS) research facility engaged in research into disease in wildlife. The facility was founded in 1975 and was charged with the task of assessing the effects of diseases on wild animals as a biomedical laboratory and of investigating the extent to which various pathogens have an influence on the reduction of the game population. The NWHC is based in Madison, Wisconsin .

One of the main responsibilities of the NWHC is currently monitoring for outbreaks of the H5N1 influenza A virus ("bird flu") in wildlife in the United States.
