story
In the late 1980s, Bob Malowney organized the first yo-yo competitions in Chico. In collaboration with the Chico Area Recreation District, he conducted trick competitions, which aroused increasing interest among the population in the early 1990s. At the same time as the events, Malowney began collecting yo-yos from all over the world. In 1993 he opened the National Yo-Yo Museum in Downtown Chico.
exhibition
With several thousand yo-yos and memorabilia , the museum houses what it claims to be the world's largest yo-yo collection. The exhibits mainly date from the 1920s to the present day.
The main attraction of the museum is Big Yo . The wooden yo-yo with a diameter of over 1.20 meters and a weight of around 116 kilograms was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records in 1982 as the "largest functioning wooden yo-yo in the world" . The yo-yo, an extremely enlarged version of the No Jive 3 in 1 model by the US yo-yo developer Tom Kuhn, was built in 1979 and is operated with a crane. As part of the National Yo-Yo Contest 2004, Big Yo was played again with a crane in front of the museum on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.
Events
The museum regularly offers various yo-yo courses and events. On National Yo-Yo Day, which is celebrated in the United States on June 6, yo-yo demonstrations, competitions and tours are held in and around the museum every year. In addition, the National Yo-Yo League (NYYL) competitions in the USA are managed by museum founder Malowney and his team. The NYLL championship round is held annually in October as part of the US National Yo-Yo Contest in the museum, the winner then represents the USA at the international World Yo-Yo Contest .
