The National Bank of the Republic of Belarus ( Belarusian Нацыянальны банк Рэспублікі Беларусь Nazyjanalny bank Respubliki Belarus ) is the central bank of Belarus based in the capital Minsk . The bank was founded in 1922 under the name “Belarusian Republican Bank” by the Soviet People's Commissar of Belarus, but it soon worked under the direction of the State Bank of the USSR . After restructuring in 1959 and 1987, the bank has existed in its current form since 1991, after the banking rules for independence from the Soviet Union were passed.
tasks
The main objectives of the National Bank are:
- Protecting the Belarusian ruble and ensuring its stability, including its purchasing power and the exchange rate against foreign currencies;
- Maintaining the stability of the banking system of the Republic of Belarus.
- Ensuring the efficient, reliable and safe functioning of the payment system.
The activities of the bank are regulated in the Banking Code of October 25, 2000. Article 25 of the Banking Code states that one of the main functions of the NBRB is to ensure that the interbank settlement system functions efficiently, reliably and securely.
Making a profit is not the main objective of the National Bank.
The National Bank is accountable to the President of the Republic of Belarus.
