The National Monument Protection Authority ( French Service des sites et monuments nationaux , SSMN for short ) is the Luxembourg authority that takes care of the preservation and maintenance of archaeologically and historically significant sites in Luxembourg . The authority is subordinate to the state's Ministry of Culture.

history

The first legal provisions regarding the preservation and protection of significant landscapes, sites and monuments go back to the law of August 12, 1927. The “Section historique” (department for history) of the Institut Grand-Ducal laid the foundation for this . Its president proposed a law to the then government under Émile Reuter to set up a monument protection authority with the associated laws in Luxembourg. The basis was the French law on historical monuments from 1913 (loi du 31 décembre 1913 sur les monuments historiques). In 1927 the "Commission des sites et monuments nationaux" was created in Luxembourg.

Many monuments and historic buildings were damaged during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II . This led to a rethink in public. Luxembourg's cultural heritage was valued again by the population.

By a ministerial decision of May 13, 1971, the “Service des monuments historiques”, which replaced the “Commission des sites et monuments nationaux”, was founded under the Ministry of Culture. The task of this authority is to carry out protective measures, maintenance and renovation work on historical monuments and memorials.

By the law of September 19, 1977 the authority "Service des monuments historiques" was replaced by the current monument protection authority Service des sites et monuments nationaux .

tasks

Article 7 of the law of June 25, 2004 defines the tasks of the National Monument Protection Authority. These are u. a. the study, preservation, protection and enhancement of the architectural and industrial cultural heritage, including the buildings and objects included on the list of national monuments. In addition, monitor the execution of repairs to the buildings and objects on this list, and finally raise public awareness of the preservation of historical monuments through awareness-raising campaigns, conferences and exhibitions.
