National Earthquake Information Center

The National Earthquake Information Center , National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), is an institution of the Geological Survey of the United States , the 1966 in Rockville , Maryland as part of the National Marine Service ( National Ocean Survey built) and 1973 for the Geological Survey was transferred to the United States. The center has been located in Golden (Colorado) since 1973 .

It is to locate every major earthquake worldwide as quickly as possible and determine its strength in order to make this information accessible to scientists, international agencies and responsible institutions as well as the public. Furthermore, it is the task of the center to provide scientists and the public with a comprehensive seismic database in which data from the national and global seismograph network are archived, as well as to advance research into measurement methods that can be used to better locate earthquakes and a better understanding of the process of an earthquake can be gained.

In developing the seismic database, the center collaborates with the World Data Center , which has been active around the world since 1957 .
