The National Art Center Tokyo ( Japanese 国立 新 美術館 , Kokuritsu Shin-Bijutsukan , literally: "New National Art Museum"), internationally also NACT, National Art Center Tokyo , is an exhibition building for art opened in 2007 in Tokyo's Minato district .

In 2017 the museum had 2,986,908 visitors, making it one of the most-visited art museums in the world.

overview

The building is one of the last works by the architect Kishō Kurokawa . It takes the place of a building complex that was used as a barracks before the Second World War and as a scientific facility of the University of Tokyo after the war . The facility consists of a box-like part of the building that contains the exhibition rooms on the ground floor and two additional floors. In front of it is a corrugated glass facade (height 21.6 m, width 160 m) that extends to the 2nd floor and offers space for two mushroom-like towers. One tower houses a restaurant, the other, smaller one a café.

business

10 halls with 1000 m² each are available for exhibitions, which are allocated to publicly advertised exhibitions organized by art associations. Balconies at the rear of the building allow a view outside without leaving the exhibition. There are also 2 halls of 2000 m² each for special exhibitions. A lecture hall, 3 seminar rooms, restaurant, café, art library and sales booths complete the facility.

Since the art center, contrary to the Japanese name suggests, is not a museum with its own collection, but a space for exhibitions, it relieves the burden on the art museums, which can only use the rooms to a limited extent for the presentation of their own collection during special exhibitions. On the other hand, the center competes with the existing exhibition spaces, e.g. B. those of the city.

The NACT, together with the private museums, the Mori Art Museum and the Suntory Museum of Art , forms the "Roppongi Art Triangle". NACT is easily accessible from Nogisaki Metro Station on the Chiyoda Line , which is directly accessible.
