Lviv National Opera
The National Opera Lviv ( Ukrainian Львівський національний опери Lwiwskyj nazionalnyj opery , full name Львівський національний академічний театр опери та балету імені Соломії Крушельницької Lwiwskyj nazionalnyj akademitschnyj teatr opery ta baletu imeni Solomiji Kruschelnyzkoji National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater Lviv named after Salome Krushelnytska ) is one of the main attractions of the western Ukrainian city of Lviv .
history
The current building is the result of an architectural competition held in 1895 that was won by the Polish architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski (1845–1903), the then director of the city's technical college.
Gorgolewski proposed to build the theater in the former marshland of the arched Poltva River , and this pioneering decision resulted in an essential design element for today's "freedom avenue" (today's common name "avenue" for Ukrainian "prospect": Проспект Свободи - Prospekt Swobody) : originally after Archduke Karl Ludwig , later named after WI Lenin , Lemberger Hauptstrasse and promenade). The foundation stone was laid on June 5, 1896; the actual construction phase lasted just over three years (according to the inscription in the foyer, 1897 to 1900). The historicist building was based on the models of the architecture of the Renaissance and Baroque, but in concrete terms apparently on that of the Vienna Court Opera . The magnificent interior is decorated with multi-colored marble, frescoes, ornaments, statues and reliefs, for which (with the exception of the statues) E. Pliszewski was responsible. The allegorical figures of tragedy and comedy above the portal were created by P. Wijtowicz. The hall of mirrors in the break foyer was built under the direction of S. Dembicki with the participation of the painter M. Harasymowicz.
The auditorium is in the form of a lyre and is also richly decorated, the iron curtain shows a panorama of the city of Lviv at the time the theater was built. The auditorium holds 1070 visitors and is designed in the traditional form of a box theater.
The statue of Lenin , which was posted in front of the main entrance of the theater for decades, was dismantled after Ukraine gained independence. In their place there has been a well system for some time.
