The Tara National Park is a national park founded in 1981 in the mountainous region of western Serbia . The Tara Mountains adjoin the Zlatibor Mountains to the northwest and extend to the Drina , which here forms the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina .
The national park extends over a total area of 37,584 hectares, the core area is about 22,000 hectares. The height differences go from 250 m above sea level to 1500 m. The park's administrative authority is based in the nearby town of Bajina Bašta .
Three quarters of the area of the national park are covered by dense forests. A botanical specialty is the Serbian spruce , the only area of which is found in Tara. Due to the partly rare plant species and the diversity of animals, the national park is of scientific interest and for this reason has been placed under the strictest legal protection.
The scenic attractiveness also makes the national park an important tourist destination in the region . Several places offer health resorts , one of the attractions often used by tourists is boat tours through the deep gorges. Not far from the national park, the Šarganska osmica museum and tourist railway was put into operation in 2003 .
