The National Park House Matrei is a Grade II listed ( list entry ) building in the town of Matrei . It was opened as a schoolhouse in 1866 and is now used as the National Park House of the Hohe Tauern National Park .

The building was opened in 1866 and served as a school building and barracks for the local gendarmes. At times the building was also used as a location for the municipal administration, as a bank branch of the Raiffeisenkasse and as a residential building for teaching sisters. Between 2001 and 2002 the building was converted.

The former school building is a three-storey cube with axially arranged double-leaf box windows. The eaves are concave, the saddle roof has dormer windows and a tall chimney rises above it. Inside there are groin vaults. In the course of the adaptation to the National Park House, a steel and glass cube was placed in front of the entrance, in which an elevator was housed. In addition, breakthroughs were made inside and a glass dome was inserted into the roof structure.
