National parks in Greece
There are 12 national parks in Greece , two of which are marine national parks.
history
The need to designate national parks was recognized in 1937 when the first law establishing national parks in Greece was issued during the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas . In 1938 the first national park in Greece was designated, the Olympos National Park , followed by the rapid designation of the Parnassos National Park .
Shape of the Greek national parks
Each national park consists of a core zone and the area surrounding it. According to Greek law, the core zone must not be smaller than 15,000,000 m², with the exception of the marine national parks.
Only scientific research , gentle recreational activities and the collection of environmental information are allowed in the core zone of the national park . The construction of menageries , fish farms , roads , camping and hiking infrastructure, combined with logging and grazing are only permitted in the area surrounding the national park.
